Why Do Time Zones Exist? A Short History of Standard Time
For most of human history, every town kept its own time. Noon was simply the moment the sun stood highest over your town — so when it was 12:00 in Bristol, it was already 12:10 in London. Nobody minded, because nothing moved fast enough for ten minutes to matter.
The railway problem
Then came the railways. A train timetable is meaningless if every station along the line keeps a different clock, and by the 1840s British railway companies had adopted a single "railway time" — Greenwich Mean Time, carried along the lines by telegraph. Stations famously ran clocks with two minute hands for a while: one for local time, one for London's.
The United States had it worse. By the early 1880s American railroads juggled dozens of regional standards; a traveller from Boston to San Francisco might reset a pocket watch twenty times. On 18 November 1883 — remembered as "the day of two noons" — North American railroads switched to four standard zones, and most cities followed within months.
Greenwich becomes the world's zero
A year later, in October 1884, delegates from 26 nations met in Washington, D.C. for the International Meridian Conference and chose the meridian through Greenwich as longitude zero. That decision made GMT the world's reference, and the planet could be divided into offsets from it — the system of time zones we still use, now anchored to UTC and kept by atomic clocks.
Zones today
Politics has bent the tidy 24-slice picture ever since: China spans one zone, France counts twelve thanks to its territories, and offsets like India's +05:30 or Nepal's +05:45 exist because solar noon still matters to people.
