Why the Moon Has Phases (and Why It Isn’t Earth’s Shadow)
Ask why the moon has phases and a surprising number of people answer "Earth's shadow". It's an intuitive guess and it's wrong — if it were true, we'd see a phase change only during the rare alignments that actually produce eclipses.
Half the moon is always lit
The sun illuminates exactly half of the moon at all times, just as it lights half of Earth. What changes is how much of that lit half we can see from here. As the moon travels its ~29.5-day orbit, our viewing angle shifts. At new moon the lit side faces away from us; at full moon we see it head-on; in between we catch it at an angle, producing crescents and gibbous shapes.
That 29.5-day cycle — the synodic month — is slightly longer than the 27.3 days the moon takes to actually orbit Earth. The difference exists because Earth is moving around the sun at the same time, so the moon has to travel a little further each cycle to return to the same sun–Earth–moon geometry. The synodic month is what calendars care about, and it's why lunar festivals drift against the Gregorian year.
Where the shadow does come in
Earth's shadow produces exactly one thing: a lunar eclipse. It happens only at full moon, and only when the alignment is close enough — which isn't every month, because the moon's orbit is tilted about 5° from Earth's orbital plane. Most full moons pass above or below the shadow entirely.
Why the moon looks "wrong" abroad
A waxing crescent lit on the right in London appears lit on the left from Sydney — the same moon, viewed by observers standing effectively upside down relative to each other. Near the equator the crescent can look like a bowl balanced on its base, which is why some cultures describe a "smiling moon". Nothing about the moon changed; only your orientation did.
Reading the phase
A quick trick for the northern hemisphere: if the crescent looks like a D, it's waxing (growing toward full); if it looks like a C, it's waning. In the southern hemisphere, reverse it. And the moon is up during the day far more often than people notice — a first-quarter moon rises around noon and is perfectly visible all afternoon.
